About the new owner of The Leatherman

Hello, my name is Clayton Miller. I learned to know Gary Fatherree (founder of the The Leatherman) while hunting with him during our Pennsylvania late flintlock only season. Gary expressed his interest to retire to our hunting group during the 2020 late season. I was working at a salt processing plant doing mostly maintenance and some fabricating. I have always liked building things and working with my hands, so the opportunity seemed like a fit. I still took a while to decide if this is really what I wanted to do. Early in 2022, I asked Gary if he had anyone interested in buying his business and I expressed interested in doing so. I visited his shop several times that summer to see the process, and eventually run some of the machinery. This gave me a good chance to see if leather work was going to be a good fit (I had no prior knowledge of leather working). Plans were made for me to buy the business in October of 2022, and I quit my job at the end September of that year. Gary started training me right away and it wasn't long before I was able to run things on my own. In March of 2023 in moved the business to my location in Abbottstown, PA. I have been loving the opportunity to work from home and being able to be more involved in the lives of my wife and 4 children.

Having started in reenacting and the building of muzzleloader rifles some 30 odd years ago, Gary Fatherree found a need for quality leather possibles bags and other leather muzzleloading goods at a reasonable price for the average enthusiast that had no skills or knowledge or time to make his or her own leather goods. He was working in the shoe making business at the time and had all the resources necessary to start his own part time business where he became known as The Leatherman to all he sold my leathers to. In 1997 when the shoe industry closed down, he decided to make a go of it full time making motorcycle and shooting related products but that only lasted 2 years when Harley Davidson pulled all non-license products out of the dealerships. He started working for a printing company for 4 years before 9/11 happened and he found myself out of that job too. He had built up enough muzzleloader related dealers and a website that he could now go full time again and he has never looked back. In 2007 he started developing a line of leather shot gun shooting accessories for sporting clays and trap and skeet. Although there is a large base of branded products already covering the shot gun shooting sports, Gary felt he could continue to add new product to the line. Be sure to check our schedule of events to see where we will be set up displaying the product. Send us pictures of you using any of my products and I will post them on the gallery page. And please feel free to call me if you have any questions regarding my products.
